REPRINTS
2000AD Annual 1982, Judge Dredd Megazine 4.04, Spellbinders 13 and Flesh: The Dino Files.
SYNOPSIS
After a visit to the Flesh processing facility, Joe is attacked by a Pterandon.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First appearance of the Fleshdozer.
INFORMATION
Dinosaurs are humanely stunned before they are dropped into the fleshdozer and turned into pre-packaged Flesh. Trans-Time rangers use spotter planes and air buggies, and are armed with power-assisted lassoes, blaster guns and electric goads. Alamosaurus are referred to by the nickname 'pinheads'.
EARL REAGAN
He is still impressed by the time travel device which sends the Flesh to the 23rd Century.
OTHER CHARACTERS
JOE BRONTOWSKI
He is attacked by a Pteranodon.
HUCK
Trans-Time Corporation employee. He is killed by a falling Styracosaur corpse.
DEATHS
Three. Huck is killed by a falling Styracosaur. The Styracosaur and Huck's friend are dropped into the Fleshdozer alive.
BEST LINES
Joe: "Carved up by the Fleshdozer! What away to go, boss!"
Reagan: "Yeah! He'll be turned into pre-packaged Flesh just like the Styracosaur."
WORST LINES
Joe: "It's gone!"
Reagan: "To the twenty-third century, where we comes from. Seen it happen a thousand time before - but it's still a miracle to a simple ranger like me."
CATCHPHRASES
None.
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
None.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
The use of the words beamed and energise to describe teleportation recalls the transporter from Star Trek (1966-1969), although it wasn't used for time travel.
Alamosaurus was a quadruped herbivore and the largest known dinosaur from North America. Pteranodon is a genus of pterosaurs found across North America which included some of the largest known flying reptiles (wingspans over 6 metres). Both lived in the late Cretaceous Period.
MISTAKES
Pteranodon had no teeth and the plural form of lasso is lassos.
RETROSPECT
None.
NOTES
None.
CREDITS
Script: Ken Armstrong
Artist: Boix
Letters: Bill Nuttall
In addition to Flesh, Ken Armstrong also wrote for Dan Dare and The Mind Of Wolfie Smith.
REVIEW
The Fleshdozer and the dinosaur attack are fantastic set pieces. Any comic strip that ends with a man attempting to strangle a Pteranodon is on to a winner. Flesh is shaping up to be very interesting.

2000AD Annual 1982, Judge Dredd Megazine 4.04, Spellbinders 13 and Flesh: The Dino Files
SYNOPSIS
Craving the taste of flesh, the people of the 23rd century send rangers back 65 million years to herd dinosaurs for their meat.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First Flesh, first appearance of Earl Reagan, Joe Brontowski and the Trans-Time Corporation.
INFORMATION
By the 23rd Century most animals have been destroyed and people survived on synthetic foods, but the discovery of time travel changed that.
The Trans-Time Corporation uses time travel to go back 65 million years and hunt dinosaurs, like Styracosaur, for their flesh. The company operates a base in the past to slaughter and process the meat and then beam it to the 23rd century.
Herder vehicles have two very large tyres and are designed to absorb shock.
EARL REAGAN
He works for Trans-Time Corporation as the boss of the rangers who drove herds of herbivorous dinosaurs. He uses an electric whip to turn the stampede away from danger.
OTHER CHARACTERS
JOE BRONTOWSKI
He works for Trans-Time Corporation and has just joined Reagan's crew. He shoots a tyrannosaur in the face and its head explodes.
MAVERICK
He works for Trans-Time Corporation. He is eaten alive by a Phobosuchus during his last tour of duty.
DEATHS
At least five. Maverick is eaten by a Phobosuchus, while Joe shoots a Tyrannosaur's head off. At least three Styracosaurs fall off the edge of the cliff during the stampede. Joe says that twenty rangers (not including Maverick) and six Styracosaurs were killed.
BEST LINES
Reagan: "You ain't seen nothin' yet, Joe. We're taking the flesh eating dinosaurs' natural food - and it's driving them crazy with hunger."
WORST LINES
Maverick: "Man's always needed meat, Joe. Forget your feelings. In this hell world you gotta be tough to survive. I'm glad it's my last tour of duty and I'm going home."
It's not necessarily bad dialogue, but it screams "I will die on the next page!".
CATCHPHRASES
None.
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
An electric whip was used in Judge Dredd: 'The Troggies'. Styracosaurs also roam The Cursed Earth.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
The Beast Of Hollow Mountain (1956) and The Valley Of Gwangi (1969) are both SF Westerns featuring dinosaurs.
The genus name Phobosuchus was coined in 1924, has since been discarded because it was applied to several different crocodilian species that turned out to not be closely related to each other. It has since been largely replaced by Deinosuchus. It was an alligator that lived 80 to 73 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period in what is now North America.
Tyrannosaurs had large olfactory bulbs and nerves relative to size of their brain size, which suggests that they did indeed have a highly developed sense of smell.
MISTAKES
It's not fair to label referring to a Deinosuchus as a Phobosuchus in 1977 as a mistake, so I won't.
RETROSPECT
None.
NOTES
None.
CREDITS
There are no credits printed in the strip itself and so the following are taken from Barney.
Script: Pat Mills
Artist: Boix
Letters: Bill Nuttall
Boix is Joan Boix, who also was part of Team Fantomen providing art for The Phantom. He has a blog here.
REVIEW
Cowboys versus dinosaurs is quite simply one of the best ideas anybody has ever had. Ever. The idea of the future preying on the past and the attitudes to humans as carnivores are intriguing. This manages to be intelligent yet full of gory action.

FIRSTS & LASTS
First time that a story has reached twenty-five parts (and therefore the first twenty-five part story).
INFORMATION
The neon lights of Mega-City Two had gone out, the vaccine is delivered and the city is saved. The city boasts the Los Angeles spaceport and a new Pleasure Emporium.
JUDGE DREDD
The walk through the Mojave desert with the vaccine on his back leaves him hallucinating. A buried robot injures his leg leaving him crawling and requiring surgery. REVIEW
The big finale revisits its predecessors in style and pushes Dredd further than we've ever seen before. The hallucinations, the return of Dredd's bandage, Tweak pretending to be mute and the misplaced optimism of the last panel are great, but based upon the examples seen here Mega-City Two probably wasn't worth saving.

REVIEW
By its very nature this little oddity is slight on story, but it's actually much better than expected. The Jolly Green Giant visits Dredd sounds like a terrible idea, but it's arguably handled better here than the offending Chapters 17 and 18.

SYNOPSIS
Dredd and company are attacked by robot soldiers in Death Valley.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First time that a story has reach twenty-three parts and the last appearance of Judge Jack.
INFORMATION
The lights of Mega-City Two are visible from Death Valley.
The Battle of Armageddon was fought in 2071 in Death Valley between the Judges and the deposed President 'Bad Bob' Booth's robot armies. It is considered worse than Alamein, Iwo Jima and Stalingrad. There is a war memorial to the one hundred thousand Judges and Mega Troopers that fought and died. The battlefield is still littered with troops of the robot armies. Among them the Presidential Iron Guard, the first and second Berserkers and the Mek Panzers.
The Castillo De Los Hombres Muertos (The Fort Of The Dead Men) is nearby.
JUDGE DREDD
He speaks some Spanish. Dredd wants to pay his respects to those who fell in the Battle of Armageddon, but is attacked by the robot soldiers of the Battle of Armageddon. He, Spikes and Tweak take refuge in a nearby Spanish fort.
OTHER CHARACTERS
SPIKES
He is shot off his bike by the robot army.
JUDGE JACK
He is rattled by the robot soldiers and deserts in the Kill-Dozer. He is killed by the robot army whilst surrendering outside the Kill-Dozer.
GENERAL BLOOD 'N' GUTS
Commander of the Mek Army.
ARRESTS
None.
DEATHS
One. Judge Jack is killed by the robot troopers.
BEST LINES
Dredd: "Get a grip on yourself, Judge Jack!...It was only an old war 'droid left over from the battle, with a little energy left in its batteries. It had to obey it's programming to kill Judges!"
WORST LINES
Spikes: "This place looks like it's seen some action before...What's some joker scrawled on the wall?"
CATCHPHRASES
None.
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
There are mentions of Bad Bob Booth in Chapter 8 and Judge Jack's tangle with Satanus in Chapters 15 and 16.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
Alamein presumably refers to a World War II campaign in 1942 which included the First Battle of El Alamein, the Battle of Alam el Halfa and the Second Battle of El Alamein. The Battle of Iwo Jima or Operation Detachment, was a major battle in 1945 which the USA fought for and captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese. The Battle of Stalingrad saw Nazi Germany fought the Soviet Union for control of the city of Stalingrad from August 1942 to February 1943. It is a serious contender for bloodiest battle ever and therefore Dredd's contention that the Battle of Armageddon was worse means that more than 1.3 million must have died.
General Blood 'N' Guts is named after General George S. Patten's nickname 'Old Blood And Guts' (1885–1945).
MISTAKES
None.
RETROSPECT
Judge Jack's badge will turn up in Shok!
NOTES
None.

REVIEW
'The Bit In Death Valley' starts very well and Judge Jack's meltdown is well-explored, although it's a shame that Tweak's prediction has been shelved, however briefly.

The first page, Spikes saving Dredd and the prophecy are all great, but 'The Bit With The Mafia' suffers during the gang fight set piece from some awkward geography.

SYNOPSIS
Dredd reaches Las Vegas.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First time that a story has reached nineteen parts and first example of a mutant Judge.
INFORMATION
After the Great War, Las Vegas was taken over by the Syndicate, which runs the Judges and the gambling. Citizens can gamble on the outcome of tank battles, dice games, roulette, criminal sentencing and methods of execution. Their equivalent of the Chief Judge is known as the God Judge, their Hall Of Justice is a casino and their sentencing sometimes a game of chance: individuals might be asked to pick a card and different cards have different outcomes, for example a deuce would result in the being buried alive. Other crimes result in a jump from Loser's Leap, an elevated aperture high up in the Hall Of Justice that 'Losers' are forced to jump through to the deaths and onto a target with bets taken on their final position. Their unit of currency is the Cred. Named Las Vegas Judges: Judge Fingers.
The League Against Gambling is an illegal organisation that is anti-gambling.
JUDGE DREDD
He is appalled by the Las Vegas Judges and confront them. They force him to prepare to jump Loser's Leap.
OTHER CHARACTERS
SPIKES 'HARVEY' ROTTEN
He has always wanted to see Las Vegas.
THE GOD JUDGE
He is in charge of Las Vegas. He tries criminal cases in the Grand Hall of the city's Hall Of Justice.
JUDGE FINGERS
Las Vegas Judge. He has extra fingers. Fingers fights Dredd and forces him to jump Loser's Leap.
ARRESTS
One. The God Judge sentences one man for being a member of the League Against Gambling to being buried alive.
DEATHS

BEST LINES
Las Vegas Judge (whilst guarding the suicidal Loser's Leap queue): "Make space at da front there."
WORST LINES

CATCHPHRASES
Dredd says "M-my Dok!" at the sight of the Las Vegas Halls Of Justice.
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
None.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
Mario Puzo's 1969 novel The Godfather, its film adaption of the same name in 1972 and the film's 1974 sequel, The Godfather, Part II, all feature the Mafia and their contribution to Las Vegas.

REVIEW
'The Bit In Las Vegas' starts oddly with some confusing tank choreography, but the city, its warped version of the Judge system and its ability to seize every opportunity to gamble is great.

This strip featured alongside Ant Wars, Dan Dare, Tharg's Future Shocks, Robo-Hunter, part four of the Cursed Earth board game and an Ant Wars cover by Kevin O'Neill.
PAGE COUNT

REPRINTS
None.
SYNOPSIS
Dredd and friends escape Gribbon and his trademarked workforce.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First time that a story has reached eighteen parts and the last of the banned strips.
INFORMATION
Judges need to be ambidextrous marksmen.
Gribbon's farm was built on the site of a pre-Atomic War Government Agricultural Research Station. It burns to the ground and he and his creatures are all killed.
JUDGE DREDD
He has been drugged, when he comes around he attacks Doctor Gribbon, escapes his bonds and discovers the doctor's inspiration for his creatures. Gribbon shoots him in the left shoulder.
OTHER CHARACTERS
DOCTOR GRIBBON
He took inspiration for his creatures from pre-Atomic War advertising. Dredd incapacitates him and escapes, but Gribbon traps him with Spikes and Jack in a concrete corridor with the walls closing in. He is later killed by a tablet-kid powder jam that caused his gun to explode.
TWEAK
He eats his way through a concrete wall to save Dredd, Spikes and Jack. The impurities in the rock give him indigestion.
ARRESTS
None.
DEATHS
At least 48. Dredd pops a Michelin Man-style creature. Elmer and Abner are killed when the Solar Power explodes as are all the creatures attacking them (I count 43). Gribbon shoots two of the Tablet-kids dead, one of whom jams the barrel of his gun and the doctor is killed when it explodes.
BEST LINES
Gribbon: "Ah! Awake, Dredd? Excellent! So much more interesting to operate on a conscious subject!"
WORST LINES
Michelin Man-style creature: "Whee-ssss!"
Why is he saying this? Surely, this is a sound effect.
CATCHPHRASES
Another "Drokk it!" from Dredd, while Tweak says "Twark!" three times, "Tweak" twice and "Twurk" once and one of the green giants laughs a potentially copyrighted "Ho ho ho!".
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
None.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
Soul food is a form of African American cuisine which is influenced by food of West Africa, Louisiana Creole and the Southern United States. "Tiens!" is French for "Hey!"
MISTAKES
The Michelin Man style creature fires at Judges Dredd and Jack with their own Lawgivers with none of the self-destructing ill effects established in Judge Dredd: 'The Wreath Murders'.
RETROSPECT
The threat of legal action from the owners of the Jolly Green Giant caused IPC to promise that neither this strip, nor its predecessor, would ever be reprinted. In addition, an apology strip would be published in Prog 84.
NOTES
None.

REVIEW
The eccentric set up of chapter 17 at least gave the impression that we were onto something interesting. Sadly it was not to be. This wasn't worth the prospect of the legal action, Dredd's moralising at the end is very awkward and the best thing about 'The Banned Bit With Corporate Mascots' is that its superfluity means that The Cursed Earth can still be enjoyed without it.

SYNOPSIS
Dredd encounters some copyright infringing mascots and is drugged.
FIRSTS & LASTS
Fist time that a story has reached seventeen parts.
INFORMATION
In the middle of the Great Utah Dustbowl lies a grassland and a farm, which is home to a variety of creatures from green giants to soluble people.
In 2093, Gribbon's farm produced a Blueberry and Mesquite wine, which he will one day describe as "a rather vivacious vintage!"
JUDGE DREDD
He is almost eaten by a giant. He is drugged by Gribbon.
OTHER CHARACTERS
SPIKES 'HARVEY' ROTTEN
He is drugged by Gribbon.
GRIBBON
He runs a farm in the Great Utah Dustbowl. He plans to extract gland fluids from Dredd and Spikes via brain surgery to feed his creatures.
ELMER & ABNER
Two thirty feet tall green giants.
ARRESTS
None.
DEATHS
Two. Alki-4 dissolves in water, while Dredd shoots a farmhand dead.
BEST LINES
Farmhand: "Quit, strugglin', brat! It's the big fizz for you!"
WORST LINES
Spikes: "(Ha Ha) Even better than matchsticks under the toenails!"
What?
CATCHPHRASES
Dredd fits two futuristic expletives into one speech bubble: "Stomm! That drokking giant again!" and takes Dokk's name is vain twice.
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
None.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
Elmer and Abner would struggle to look more like the Minnesota Valley Canning Company's mascot for Green Giant Vegetables since 1928 and one of them even says "I'm the Jolly Green Giant..." Alkis-4 9, 25 and 42 look very much like Speedy the face of Alka Seltzer since 1951. Gribbon looks dangerously close to Kentucky Fried Chicken's Colonel modelled on founder Harland Sanders (1890–1980). Mr Peanut is the company logo for Planters Peanuts created via a 1916 competition by a fourteen year-old schoolboy named Antonio Gentile and another artist who added the spats, top hat, monocle and cane. The Michelin Man is the symbol of the Michelin tire company since 1894 and one of the world's oldest trademarks, his name is Bibendum and apparently comes from the slogan "Nunc est bibendum", which bizarrely means "Now is the time to drink".
MISTAKES
Spikes describes their journey so far as "a thousand miles of hell on Earth", but they've driven about twice that.
RETROSPECT
None.
NOTES
The gland fluids which the creatures feed on must go pretty far, because Gribbon say they haven't had any visitors for many years.
CREDITS

Jack Adrian is a pseudonym used by Chris Lowder. This instalment of The Cursed Earth and its successor were the only Judge Dredd strips that Lowder scripted, but he also wrote two text stories for Judge Dredd annuals. He also wrote for Dan Dare, Invasion, Tharg's Future Shocks, Timequake, Ro-Busters, a one-off called The Great Detective Caper and plenty of Time Twisters.
REVIEW
What were they thinking? This is beyond odd. It's like an adaptation of The Island Of Doctor Moreau with the cast drawn exclusively from corporate mascots with the express hope of getting sued. In its favour, Brian Bolland's artwork is beautiful as ever.

Dredd: "What is there to say, Spikes - Except...we're dead meat!"
CATCHPHRASES
Dredd says "what the Drokk...?"
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
Satanus is revealed to be the clone of the son of Old One Eye from Flesh.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
For Whom the Bell Tolls is a novel by Ernest Hemingway published in 1940.
In the saloon someone sings a version of 'Home On The Range' with dinosaury lyrics, the original lyrics were written by Dr. Brewster M. Higley (1823–1911) in the early 1870s, set to music by Daniel E. Kelley (1845–1905) and it was officially adopted as the state song of Kansas in 1947.
Scolosaurus is a heavily armoured dinosaur from about 76 million years ago and fossils have been found in what is now Canada. Brontosaurus, now known by the name Apatosaurus, lived about 150 million years ago, during the Jurassic Period and was one of the largest land animals known to have ever existed.
MISTAKES
Vittals again.
RETROSPECT
None.
NOTES
None.
CREDITS
Script: Pat Mills
Artist: Mike McMahon

REVIEW
Another flashback heavy chapter, but the tie in with Flesh is great and the rudimentary pseudo-religion of the people of Repentance is a nice touch, deftly explained.

SYNOPSIS
Dredd encounters fleeing dinosaurs and is stalked by their predator.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First time that a story has reached thirteen parts and the first appearance of Satanus.
INFORMATION
The Dinosaur National Park brought back several species of dinosaur using genetic engineering. When the Atomic War (possibly also referred to as World War Three) affected the area the specimens were able to roam freely. Among the dinosaurs recreated are Styracosaurus, Diplodocus, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Pterodactyl and Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Repentance is a town a few miles away from Dinosaur National Park.
JUDGE DREDD
He is suspicious of people he deems too friendly.
OTHER CHARACTERS
SATANUS
A black Tyrannosaurus Rex with red eyes. His DNA was cloned from a fossil in the Colorado Desert and the cells were injected into alligator eggs. He was the only T-Rex of a batch of 4 to successfully hatch from the egg and within seconds he was walking and bit a scientist's finger. He was initially fed on sheep, then cattle and at one point a cat. An attempt to cut down his food intake resulted in one of the scientists losing a leg. He refused to eat a soya meat substitute. When the Dinosaur National Park opened he was the star attraction and fed on drugged meat to keep him docile. Until one day, a keeper forgot to drug the meat and Satanus made an escape attempt with two Hairy Tyrannosaurs eating seven tourists in the process. When recaptured he saw his fellow escapees sedated, but he resisted and escaped a second time into the mountains. Six rangers went in search of him and failed to return. He has possibly become known as the Dark One. He follows Dredd's land-raider to the town of Repentence, which Satanus regards as his 'special place'.
ARRESTS
None.
DEATHS
At least fourteen. A Styracosaur is eaten alive by Satanus in the present, while in flashback he eats sheep, cattle, a cat and at least thirteen people between panels.
BEST LINES
Spikes: "I thought it was meant to stand up to anything, Judgey."
Dredd: "Guess no-one told the manufacturer about stampeding dinosaurs!"
WORST LINES
Judge Jack: "...Like something out of Hell!"
CATCHPHRASES
Dredd "By Stomm!"
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
None.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
Other than the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the other specimens represented at the Dinosaur National Park are all herbivorous and lived in what is now North America. Diplodocus and Stegosaurus lived about 150 million years ago at the end of the Jurassic Period while Styracosaurus and Triceratops lived in the Cretaceous Period about 75 million years ago and 65 million years ago respectively. There is also an unidentifiable Pterosaur and neck frilled lizard. The carnivore Tyrannosaurus Rex was also to be found in the late Cretaceous Period about 65 million years ago and it easily the most famous dinosaur of all. We are so familiar with the Tyrannosaurus Rex that the idea of a Hairy T-Rex seems ridiculous, but three fossils of Yutyrannus, a related species, were discovered in China in 2012 with evidence of feathers or hairy bristles.
MISTAKES
None.
RETROSPECT
The use of genetic engineering from fossil DNA to bring back the dinosaurs will later be a central tenet of Michael Crichton's Jurassic Park novel (1990) and subsequent film (1993).
NOTES
None.
CREDITS
Script: Pat Mills
Artist: Mike McMahon
Letters: Tom Frame
REVIEW
'The Bit With The Dinosaurs' barely features Dredd as it gets underway with an extended flashback. It's clear this is the prologue to a story of much larger scope. The dinosaurs look great and the Jurassic Park comparison is eerily close.
