Trans-Time's Guide To Mega-City One!
FIRST PUBLISHED
Judge Dredd Annual 1981
DATELINE
1 Sept 80
PAGE COUNT

REPRINTS
Judge Dredd: The Restricted Files 04.
SYNOPSIS
A holiday brochure for Mega-City One.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First real insight into the present era in Flesh.
INFORMATION
(This Brochure is copyright Trans-Time Holidays, 2300)
Robots, aliens and animals with the ability to speak are less common in the 23rd Century than they are in the 22nd. Portable Time-Converters are a time travel device. Biz-Wiz Enterprises are a printing company. Trans-Time is a registered corporation. Trans-Time beams its customers' mail back to the time they left.
Among the tours offered by Trans-Time offer a 'Hell Trip' to an undisclosed point in the 20th Century, an opportunity to see Hitler's V1s over London, the A-Bomb explode above Hiroshima, the Lion's tea party in Ancient Rome, a point after the Atomic War, France during the Reign of Terror, the American Civil War, England during the Volgan Invasion of 1999, a 20th Century package tour to Spain's Costa Del Sol, Germany during Nazi rule, Russia during the KGB, China during Mao's Long March, Australia during its settlement by criminals, Sicily during a feud between the Capone family and their neighbours and Mega-City One in 2101.
The Surgeon General has issued a health warning that time travel can be hazardous to health. Trans-Time acknowledge the warning and state that they are not obliged to pay compensation.
Trans-Time's Mega-City One tour arrives at Kennedy Space-Port. Despite the city's accommodation crisis Trans-Time have secured rooms in Charlton Heston Block. Located in the southern sector of the city, 750 crimes are committed in the cityblock every day, but each tour group is supplied with a Securi-droid. The tour includes a free journey to the laundry that Walter visits every week and a trip to the Cursed Earth. Trans-Time publishes a handbook entitled The Streets Of Mega-City One.
Only 13% of Mega-City One's population are in employment. Robots are available in various size, from tiny shoe-polishing models to huge demolition droids. 2101's Robot Of The Year Show features Heavy Metal Kids Mk II. The city has an Alien Relations Board. There are 312 Holovision stations broadcasting in Mega-City One and the Morning News-Fax is a newspaper. The Weather Congress collates the weather preference votes of citizens. Usually the city is hot and sunny, but occasionally a rain storm is ordered to wash the streets. The Mega-City 5000 race was stopped in 2099.
The Judge system is headed by a triumvirate called The Grand Council Of Judges. The Justice Day Parade is an annual event. Tours of The Academy of Law are conducted regularly. Queues form long before the Statue of Judgement opens for business and last all day.
Although derelict the Empire State Building features a reconstruction of Judge Dredd's battle with the Whitey Gang.
As many as fifty thousand Judges could be working in the Grand Hall of Justice at any one time.
ARTHUR RAYMOND
Nicknamed Art 'Ain't-He-Awful' Raymond.

CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
Obviously this draws heavily on Flesh. Arthur Raymond opens this brochure with another letter and the Surgeon General's health warning includes an image from Flesh, Book One part 18.
There is a mention of a "recent scandal involving a researcher at the city's Department of Science passing the system's secrets to the Sov-Cities" in Battle Of The Black Atlantic, a reference to the laundry that Walter visits every week as seen in A Tale From Walter's Scwapbook.
There are references to Charlton Heston Block from Cityblock 1, the smokatorium from Smoker's Crime, John Nobody, the Dream Palace and the Annual Justice Day Parade from Dream Palace, The New You Face Parlour from The New You, Aeroball the focus of Harlem Heroes, The Robot Of The Year Show that featured in Robots, The Mega-City 5000 seen in a strip of the same name, You Bet Your Life and the Mines Of Mutieland from You Bet Your Life, Devil's Island, the Empire State Building and Judge Dredd's battle with the Whitey Gang from Judge Whitey, the Palais de Boing and Pinboing Wizard, Sob Story, Johnny Teardrop and Otto Sump from Sob Story, Medicine Today and Call-Me-Kenneth 'Robot Wars', part 2 and Crime Time seen in part 8, Sensor-Round from Krong, the Power Tower and Barney first seen in Father Earth, the Mega-City Standard and the Daily News mentioned in The Invisible Man, part 2, the Mega-Times, Rocky Vollo and Mawxus (sic) Slym from Crime And Punishment, the Weather Congress named in The Solar Sniper, The Academy of Law, Futsies and the Harlem Heroes stadium from The Academy Of Law, cadet's right(s) from Mutie The Pig, part 2, The Statue Of Judgement first seen in The Statue Of Judgement, Mac first seen in The Wreath Murders, Judge Anderson's body in the Hall of Heroes as seen in Judge Death, part 3, Aftermath Square named as such in The Greatest Story Ever Told, Troggies from The Troggies, Don Uggie Apelino and the talking apes first seen in 'The Ape Gang' and his later attempt to raise a billion credits to kill Dredd in The Billion Credit Caper, The Dredd Act from The Guinea Pig That Changed The Law, Conred Conn from The Day The Law Died, part 13, Dino Valdi mentioned in Dredd And the Mob Blitzers, Kleggs first seen in The Day The Law Died, part 6 and an advert for The Forever Towers Home For The Semi-Dead from The Forever Crimes.
A tour to England during the Volgan Invasion of 1999 is obviously a reference to Invasion!
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
The Long March (October 1933-October 1935) was a military retreat undertaken by the Red Army of the Communist Party of China, which began the ascent to power of Mao Zedong (1893-1976).
MISTAKES
Cadet's Rights is incorrectly stated as Cadet's Right, while Nawxyus Slym is now Mawxus Slym.

REVIEW
To effectively see one strip through the eyes of another, without the interaction of a traditional crossover is a real opportunity and it's certainly not one that is squandered here. This is excellent and surprisingly thorough.

MISTAKES
It's odd that the quotes are presented without quotation marks. Also, Dredd was 33 in 2099 and it's odd something published in 1980 isn't more up to date.
RETROSPECT
The Cursed Earth is given as Dredd's longest adventure which was true at the time, but it's worth remembering that this was published during the run of The Judge Child, which would beat the previous story's record by one week.

REVIEW
Well, this is odd. Of all the facts about Dredd that this could have revealed, instead it focuses on the events of Judge Whitey to the exclusion of everything else. Disappointing.

REVIEW
This is wonderfully disturbing. The process that that the Flesh goes through is unflinchingly acknowledged and seeing the packaging and consumption of the end product provides some much needed context. The artwork is stunning and the futuristic cutlery is terrifying, but it's a shame that someone obviously didn't have faith in the audience to appreciate the subtext (see WORST LINES above).

SYNOPSIS
Here's a schematic of a Judge's Law-giver.
FIRSTS & LASTS
First time Law-giver has a hyphen in it.
INFORMATION
The nose of the Lawgiver has an electro-magnetic ring, which Heat Seeker shells may be coupled to.
The barrel is diactinic, made of a neoform light-transmitting pexalt alloy and contains compression jaws and tongues for velocity boost. Incendiary shells are electro-ignited as they leave the gun.
The Law-giver takes both standard and auxilliary magazines, ahead of these are frontal exhaust ducts to prevent excess compression and a Flash input socket where a stroboscopic flash head can be attached. The magazines are vacuum sealed and electo-coupled. Magazine capacity 24 shells (12 each of 2 different types).
The handle houses a solid state power pack, a palm print analyser linked to a self destruct charge and a computer which controls the target selector and fine focus automatically. There is a manual override for auto-modes.
The Viewfinder Data Readout shows a crosshair, a target code, velocity rating, magazine level indicator and shell identity. The sight has night vision, diachrotic infrared electro filter and magnifies to 10 diopters. The viewfinder has a minimum range of 200mm and a zoom facility which increase to 2000mm for long range.
GP Shells are propelled by Argon 88b, a highly unstable element which combusts on contact with Oxygen. As the shell's electrostatic pin rotates it collects fuel, replaces it with de-Oxygenated air from the combustion chamber. The fuel is delivered to the chamber and opens the air ducts to allow the Argon 88b to combust. The velocity and range of a shell is determined by the jet fan diameter and the speed of pin rotation. The suggested range for G.P. Shells is a maximum of 3 miles, with an average shell velocity of (medium charge 500 f.p.s.). The Law-Giver can fire the following shell types: General Purpose (GP), Rubber Ricochet (RR), Incendiary (I), Armour Piercing (AP), Grenade (G), High Explosive (HE).
The flash strobe head, supplementary power packs, replacement muzzle and spare viewfinder screen are kept in the Judge's left boot pocket.
A maximum of three heat seeker shells are stored in each of the Judge's glove pouches.

FIRSTS & LASTS
The Futuregraph relating to Harlem Heroes.
INFORMATION
Super Liners are a new breed of road vehicles. They use special roads marked 'Super Liner Only' and park outside cities in huge Liner Parks.
This particular model of Super Liner is 60 metres long, 22 metres tall and has an unladen weight of 200 tonnes. It accelerated from 0 to 100 mph in 4 seconds and has a cruising speed of 300 mph. The engine is powered by a nuclear generator which drives a bank of hover engines in the 'skirt' and a forward thrust engine in the tail. A computer guidance system assists the pilot in driving the liner. The Liner's engine was built by the Power Division of Global Dynamics Corporation, while the bodywork is by Forde Transportation Incorporated.
It has four levels. Starting at the top, the first level hosts the swimming pool and observation deck in front of the thrust engine. On the second floor you will find the command bridge, tactics room, medic room, liquid coolant room and baggage store. There is a lounge on the third floor, while the fourth features the gym and sauna, dormitory, while a transport hanger crosses both of the lower floors. The transport hanger contains the team helicopter, a hover car and seven hover mopeds.

REVIEW
Who doesn't love cutaway drawings? I don't know the answer, but in other news: I love cutaway drawings. Apart from the delightfully naive use of the word vibrator, these don't reveal anything particularly groundbreaking about the aeroball equipment or the Harlem Heroes themselves. They do however raise a couple of questions: Have we stumbled in on Giant in a state of undress? What is he wearing on his top half?

Futuregraph: Mega-City 1
What's this? It's only the fourth ever post and already I've given up on comic strips? No, not at all.
NAME
Futuregraph: Mega-City 1
FIRST PUBLISHED
2000 A.D. Programme 3
DATELINE
12 Mar 77
PAGE COUNT
1
REPRINTS
Judge Dredd Annual 1981 and Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 01 as part of Bank Raid (see NOTES below)
SYNOPSIS
Judge Dredd patrols Mega-City 1 and reminds its citizens that he is the law.
FIRSTS & LASTS
Last use of recycling from Bank Raid.
INFORMATION
The year is 2099 A.D.
Mega-City 1 spreads across the Eastern Seaboard from what what was once Montreal in the North, to what was once Georgia in the south. It has a population of 100,000,000 people. The city is watched by cameras labelled Police Scan.
The United States of the West (USW) is apparently a nation state which neighbours Mega-City 1.
JUDGE DREDD
Dredd is on a clean up patrol.
OTHER CHARACTERS
None.
ARRESTS
None.
DEATHS
None.
BEST LINES
Dredd: "I am the law and you'd better believe it!" (It's nearly verbatim the slogan from the preview in Prog 1)
WORST LINES
"We really flipped over this city of the future and we know you will too."
CATCHPHRASES
Dredd says "I am the law" for the first time.
CONTINUITY & CROSSOVERS
Strictly speaking this is the first spinoff from the Judge Dredd comic strip.
INFLUENCES & REFERENCES
Unknown.
MISTAKES
None.
RETROSPECT
Where 'Judge Whitey' showed us a New York City that had outgrown the Empire State Building, this is the first real glimpse of the enormous scale of Mega-City 1 and informs the look of the city for years to come.
NOTES
This is a coloured version of the last page of Bank Raid.
CREDITS
There are no credits printed in the strip itself and so the following is taken from Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 01.
Artist: Carlos Ezquerra
Carlos Ezquerra helped design, create and eventually drew loads of Judge Dredd as well as Strontium Dog, Rick Random, ABC Warriors, The Stainless Steel Rat, Fiends Of The Eastern Front, Anderson: Psi Division, Durham Red, Al's Baby, Armageddon, The Scarlet Apocrypha, Cursed Earth Koburn. He also drew 94 covers for 2000 AD and 13 more for the Megazine. Elsewhere he has drawn Rat Pack and Major Eazy for Battle Picture Weekly in addition to the likes of Bob, The Galactic Bum, Hitman, Preacher, Star Wars: Mara Jade - By The Emperor's Hand, Just A Pilgrim, Third World War, Battlefields and the amazingly named "Operation Bollock".
REVIEW
This isn't a comic strip at all yet this picture is more significant than it might initially seem: the relocation of Dredd from New York to Mega-City 1 and the first information about the vastness of the city. The original black and white line art from 'Bank Raid' (left), is however far more impressive than this coloured version.
